Making a photo book is something I've always wanted to do but never really had a concise collection of images with which to do it. For as long as I can remember recurrent stories in the press have reported of the ever growing Big Brother Society and questioning the invasion of privacy forced upon us. 4 years ago the average Briton was recorded on camera approximately 3000 times per week, and this number has only been on the up ever since.
Upgraded systems, high definition imagery, and audio recording are just a few of the advancements in surveillance in recent years. The Data Protection Act states that we are entitled to a copy of all information that is recorded about us, this includes our recorded image. In 2007 Manu Luksch created a film entitled Faceless made up entirely of CCTV recordings of himself in day to day life blanking out the faces of all others included in the frame.
Whilst it is a subject that continues to be controversial, anyone is allowed to take pictures of us in a public place or on private property for the purpose of security, it is only the advancement and increased prevalence of these systems that give these feelings of invasion of personal space.
To cut a long story short, I am looking to create a series of work entirely in the style of CCTV images and develop, as the series goes on, to more and more invasive placements of a camera.
